Many Rent IT customers operate in commercial sectors where laptops & notebooks are used to connect to and download/communicate with a range of external devices. The traditional method for this has always been via an RS 232 Serial port. | ||||||
As laptops have now almost universally moved towards higher speed, more flexible wired communications systems such as USB & Firewire the RS 232 Serial port has increasingly disappeared from modern laptops. | ||||||
Of course RS 232 serial communications can still be undertaken via single external USB to RS 232 convertors or multiway devices such as the Edgeport 4, 8 & 16 way RS232 to USB adaptors which Rent IT can also offer on a rental basis. However these do not always offer a satisfactory solution. | ||||||
Despite these RS 232 options for connecting to your laptop the traditional on board RS232 serial port is still the most convenient means of communications and in some cases only way where the external equipment has some "issue" with the USB convertor hardware/software. As many of the external commercial products we connect to via serial RS 232 have a very long replacement life cycle (Compared to a laptop) the requirement for RS 232 serial communications will be with us for many years to come. | ||||||
