News - 2006 June More external storage products With ever increasing data storage requirements our clients are always looking for new solutions to the safe storage and transfer of large amounts of data. Whilst external hard drives and tapes offers a common solution these often do not offer the security required for vital data. Unfortunately our customers have often reported losses of data due to failures of devices or damaged/lost tapes. One solution has always been to install a traditional server system with internal RAID storage. These provide ultimate data security where data spread over a RAID 5 array can be recovered even after failure of a disc. In some cases a "hot spare" can be added so virtually seamless access to data can continue despite equipment failure. Of course traditional RAID servers are often expensive and a far from the portable solution to compete with stand alone external hard drives or the range of DLT, SDLT, LTO2, LTO3 etc back up solution available. To cross this divide Rent IT have now introduced a range of external RAID 5 boxes. These are compact units which offer all the security of a traditional RAID 5 server yet in a far smaller, and portable, package. These new devices can connect to you IT system via Firewire or USB 2 and contain an array of 5 hard discs. Our initial systems offer a raw capacity of 2.5TB which when configured as a RAID 5 gives a secure capacity of 2TB.
