Rent IT History |
Whilst the Rent IT division of Seatronics is a new venture for us, launched in late 2002, we can rightly claim to have had many years experience in the provision of IT equipment prior to this date. |
Rent IT is a division of Seatronics Ltd. Seatronics is one of the worlds leading providers of sophisticated electronics (including IT equipment) to the marine and subsea industries, Seatronics has established offices in the Middle East, Far East and USA as well as our base here in the UK. |
Established in the 1970's Seatronics Ltd supports many of the worlds leading survey and scientific companies. You may have seen TV programs showing wonderful pictures of the seabed through video or acoustic means, subsea archaeology programs, searching for shipwrecks, etc. Well the equipment they use is typical of what Seatronics works with and indeed Seatronics have been involved in supporting many of these expeditions. |
Another area Seatronics is involved in is the provision of scientific oceanographic instrumentation. You have no doubt heard of global warming creating weather changes etc, how does the scientist know this? Well through the use of instruments deployed in oceans through the world and on local scales to detect and monitor change. Once again Seatronics can supply these types of systems to both the scientific and commercial sectors |
You may well ask what this has to do with the rental of IT equipment! |
Well, as with most things now, about 7 or 8 years ago we found that PC systems and associated IT equipment was being increasingly used in the marine business. For basic administration or in many cases to run the sophisticated instruments we were providing. We initially purchased "off the shelf" products. Unfortunately whilst these may have been ideal for use under an office desk when the same computer was put on a moving vibrating vessel subject to the extremes of temperature and humidity they tended to lack reliability! |
With reliability a major issue for us (and our clients!) the only solution to this problem was to start building our own PC systems. Whilst we do build fully ruggedised industrial type units the majority of our products look very similar to a "standard" product, however internally choice of components, methods of construction and the inclusion of extra fans, board supports etc all come together to solve the reliability problem. |
We were very pleased to have this work acknowledged and our QA certification, now ISO 9001:2000, specifically includes PC construction within it. |
What does this mean to you? Well in the rental business our PC's are constantly being transported around the UK and beyond. Our construction methods may not be of great value to you when our PC is safely under your desk but it is of value when the carrier throws it off the back of his van en-route to you office. You will hopefully get a working PC rather than a box with a pile of boards in the bottom! |
Of course an added bonus to this approach is that Rent IT has the in-house ability to modify and custom design computer's to meet your exact specifications. We have built many systems specific to our customer's applications, such as 1U high dual 2.8GHz dual Zeon systems! Where other rental companies may only be able to offer you a "standard" product, forcing you to purchase specialist systems. Here at Rent IT we believe you should not have to compromise your business performance by accepting a sub standard solution. |
So why Rent IT? |
Whilst we were very well established in the marine business under the Seatronics Ltd name we were doing very little business outside this market. As we had dedicated personnel and workshops as well as a large asset base, in 2002 it was decided to expand this and move into the onshore computer rental market. With a new market our traditional Seatronics name meant very little so we launched this service in late 2002 under the more appropriate "Rent IT" branding |
The rest, as they say, is history. From this initial start where perhaps fewer than 5% of our business could be accredited to non-marine applications, by mid 2004 50% of Rent IT income comes from the onshore market with ongoing month to month growth. |
As mentioned above Seatronics Ltd was initially established in the 1970's at the beginning of the UK Offshore Oil & Gas market. Since then Seatronics has undergone many changes and in 1999 was greatly expanded following purchase by the Craig Group. |
As well as Seatronics Ltd, based in Aberdeen & Abu Dhabi, the Aberdeen based Craig Group also acquired Scantron (Aberdeen) Geomac (Houston) and Aquatron (Singapore) to create a far larger Seatronics Group with offices throughout the world. |
With the support and investment of The Craig Group Seatronics successfully expanded to be a market leader in the Offshore rental market. Along the way new ventures such as Rent IT and our subsea engineering divisions were successfully launched. |
The latest chapter in the history of Seatronics took place in July 2007 when the Seatronics Group, along with IMS & Chainco, other Craig Group companies, were sold to the Norwich based Acteon Group. Like the Craig Group the Acteon Group owns a wide range of other companies. These companies all operate within a subsea/offshore market and therefore offer an excellent match to the services and products provided by Seatronics Ltd and Rent IT. |
With new investment from the Acteon Group we expect to see continued expansion of Seatronics (And Rent IT!) core activities as well as the opportunity to look at exciting new ventures for our group. |
